Tankless water heaters are the most technically engineered water heaters for residential homes and the hot water never runs out. It's true that the hot water is continuous however since the water heater has no tank the water must pass through a set of coils (heat exchanger) that are heated as the water passes through them thus heating the water. Tankless water heaters only heat while there is a demand for hot water so the design itself is efficient because most of the time it's using no energy because there is no demand. These water heaters are also efficient in their compact design and can be hung on the wall to save floor space.

In Kentucky, the highest BTU for a residential water heater is 199,999 BTU's, anything larger is designated as a boiler and would have many other requirements under code. Other than unlimited hot water the other benefits of a gas tankless water heater are less maintenance and less gas usage since the device only runs when a hot water outlet is turned on, no more constantly heating a whole tank of water.

The only setback is, of course, they cost more than a tank-type water heater. Installation of a tankless gas water heater almost always requires running sections of new water, gas, and vent piping to the unit, since its shape and location are different than a tank type. When Switching over to a tankless water heater you can expect an installation to take the better part of an entire day.

Just like all water heaters, tankless water heaters are recommended to be flushed annually. Tankless water heaters do have longer warranty periods and are highly recommended by ASI Plumbing.
