If you did get the water shut off, then believe it or not turning it back on could cause a leak in the valve itself especially if it's old. Be sure to have an adjustable wrench on hand to tighten the packing nut on the valve if it starts to leak. A shutoff valve replacement is a common job our plumbers perform on a regular basis.
