Floor Drain Clogs are common because as the name suggests, it's level with the floor and therefore is susceptible to debris on the floor being washed into the drain. Although most of the time when a floor drain starts to back up it's a sign of a larger problem. Often times a floor drain is the last plumbing drain in the home before entering into the sewer. This is important to know because if the sewer outside of your home unknowingly starts to clog the first sign might be the floor drain backing up into your home or you may notice the smell of sewer gas coming from the floor drain.

If you notice sewage residue around the floor drain but there is no water then you've had a backup and it has slowly drained back down before you have a chance to catch it.
