Sump Pumps

A sump pump typically is set below the floor in a sump crock or sump basin and is designed to catch sub-surface water. Subsurface water can accumulate around the foundation of your home and under the basement floor and needs a point of relief.

Most homes have corrugated drain tile (a pipe with holes to collect water) around the concrete footer of your home and ties into a sump crock. The water under the basement floor will drain into this corrugated piping system then collect in the sump crock where then the sump pump will pump it up and out to the outside. Make sure the sump pump discharge piping discharges far enough away from the home to avoid cycling the water back down the foundation to the crock and sump pump.

If the home's downspouts are not discharging away from the home then rainwater could cause the sump pump to kick on more than it should and potentially shorten the lifespan of the sump pump. Check the sump pump on a regular basis in an attempt to avoid a sump pump failure. If your basement is finished and your sump pump cycles often then you might want to consider a backup sump pump system.
